MORAGA, Calif.—The Grand Canyon men's tennis team defeated Saint Mary's 6-1 for its fifth straight win on Sunday.
The Lopes won the doubles point and five of the six singles matches to avenge last season's 4-3 road defeat to the Gaels.
"The guys had a great win today," head coach Greg
Prudhomme said. "They remembered vividly the loss to Saint Mary's last year, it was a hard fought match and they got us at the end. So the guys were really looking forward to going back this year and giving it another shot, and this year they came through with flying colors."
Once again, the Lopes were dominant in doubles, taking the point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2. As a team, GCU is now 15-2 in doubles this season with the top pair of
Lorenzo Fucile and
Mathieu Rajaonah still perfect at 6-0. They were the first to finish, winning 6-4.
Lucas Grego and
Freddie Grant followed by winning 6-3, their fourth victory in a row, to secure the point.
In singles, GCU won three first sets, parlaying those matches into straight-set wins. Grego now sits at 7-0 on the season after winning 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4. Fucile won comfortably 6-3, 6-2, at No. 1. Lang extended his winning streak to five matches by winning 7-5, 7-6, at No. 3.
The team win was secured by Grant at No. 5. The sophomore from England kept pace with Grego, moving to 6-0 in singles by rallying to a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win Sunday. After dropping two matches last weekend in Nashville, Rajaonah got back on track with a three-set win Sunday.
Saint Mary's won in straight sets at No. 6 against Novak, snapping his three-match win streak.
"Saint Mary's had a great crowd out there and did a great job stopping our momentum and they got up on us early in singles,"
Prudhomme added. "We definitely had our work cut out for us, and we had a lot of long close first sets, but the guys kept composed under the pressure and noise of the home crowd and did a nice job winning some hard fought matches."
The Lopes will continue their California road trip next weekend when they play Sunday at UC Santa Barbara, a team they have not faced since 2016.
