ODGEN, Utah—The Grand Canyon women's tennis team lost 6-1 to Utah State on Saturday, capping off a quick two-match road trip to Utah. Junior
Celina Buhr provided the point for GCU, winning at No. 4 for the second match in a row.
"The girls lost a tough one today. We sure would've liked to finish off the road trip with a win against Weber State," head coach
Greg Prudhomme said. "Weber State played real well and got up on us early by winning the doubles point. The girls had to fight off the momentum going into singles and were down early, but we fought back on most of the courts in the second set."
In doubles, the Lopes (2-6) lost the doubles point by losing at Nos. 2 and 3 for the third consecutive match. Weber State won easily at those courts winning 6-1 and 6-2, and
Emilia Occhipinti and Buhr's match at No. 1 was left unfinished for the third straight match.
Heading into singles, Weber State (6-3) once again came out strong and took five of the first six sets. Junior
Celia Morel, after moving up twice in the lineup in two weeks, won the first set at No. 2 but was unable to keep the momentum, losing in tiebreakers in the second and third sets.
The Wildcats took the team win by winning the first three singles matches at Nos. 6, 5 and 3. Buhr for the second straight match won in three sets after dropping the first, winning 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
"The girls are fighting hard, they are keeping good attitudes," Prudhomme added. "So as long as they keep doing that, we're going to keep progressing. We've got some work to do in practice. We're going to roll up our sleeves and put in a couple of good days of practice."
The Lopes will look to bounce back next week with a loaded three-match schedule playing both on the road (Friday and Saturday) and at home (Sunday).
