The Grand Canyon women's tennis team will continue its five-match homestand at 10 a.m. Saturday when the Lopes welcome Cal State Fullerton to GCU Tennis Facility.
The Lopes are coming off a split weekend at home, where they defeated Southern Utah 5-2 and lost to Nevada 4-3 on the final match.
GCU junior
Emilia Occhipinti had a dominant weekend, winning matches in singles and doubles from the No. 1 position and sweeping WAC Player of the Week awards in singles and doubles (with partner
Celina Buhr).
Junior
Celia Morel also had a strong weekend, winning her matches at No. 4. Against Southern Utah, Morel won by retirement and then defeated Nevada's Roos van Reek in straight sets the following day. Morel and Occhipinti share the team lead in singles with 3-1 records.
The matchup with the Titans is a familiar one for the Lopes. GCU has an 0-3 all-time record against Cal State Fullerton with the first matchup coming in 1984, which also is the last time these two teams met in Phoenix. Since then, the two teams met again in 1991 and 2018 for Fullerton home wins.
The Titans (1-0) began their season Wednesday with a 7-0 win over UC San Diego at home. They will face Arizona State on Friday before coming to GCU on Saturday. The team is coming off a program-record 20-win season and a first-ever appearance in the Big West Tournament championship match.
