Grand Canyon men's soccer defender
Austin Day was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America first team, the organization announced Thursday.
The award is Day's second academic honor this year after also being named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 first team on Nov. 7.
"It feels good," Day said after being named to All-District. "Being in my master's program has been a little more difficult. The core classes are a little more in-depth. It's nice to know I'm still able to stay on top of things and balance sports and academics. It really is important for me to do well in both."
Day competed his final season for GCU last month as one of only two student-athletes to start all 17 matches for the Lopes. The Frisco, Texas, native was the Lopes top honoree in conference awards, earning a spot on the All-WAC second team for the first all-conference honor of his career. He recorded 1,380 minutes on the season, tallying the second-most assists on the team with four and recording five shots on goal while providing stability to a defensive line that posted six shutouts through the season.
Day holds a 3.91 graduate school GPA after completing his undergraduate degree in business with a 3.99 GPA last year. Now pursuing his Master of Business Administration with an emphasis in finance, Day was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America third team in 2018.
"I'm hoping to continue playing soccer somewhere," Day said. "I've just got to keep trying and figure out what the next step is."
