Puehse, Lang, Fucile go deep in main draws

MALIBU, Calif. — Grand Canyon's Natasha Puehse, Valentin Lang and Lorenzo Fucile made impressive runs in the main singles draws of the ITA Southwest Regionals in Southern California this weekend.

Puehse, a freshman, advanced to the round of 16 in the 128-player singles women's draw in San Diego. After a bye in the opening round, the Scottsdale, Arizona, native defeated Marina Tryina of San Diego and Ekaterina Repina of Cal State Northridge each by 6-2, 6-3 scores. In the round of 16, Puhse fell to No. 7 seed Daria Kuczer of Pepperdine 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

In doubles, Puehse teamed with transfer Jana Weiss, a sophomore, to win their opening-round match 8-4 over Siobhan Anderson and Nevada Apollo of Loyola Marymount,

On the men's side in singles, Fucile and Lang each advanced to the round of 32 in Malibu. After opening-round byes, Fucile defeated UC Irvine's Mike Mkrchian 6-2, 6-4 while Lang defeated UC Irvine's Aaron Bailey 6-2, 6-3 to move onto the next round. Lang and Fucile fell to Pac-12 opponents in the round of 32 with Fucile losing in straight sets to Arizona's Alejandro Reguant 6-3, 6-3 and Lang falling to Riley Smith of USC 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.

Lang also had a strong showing in the 64-pair doubles draw, partnering with sophomore Jakub Novak to reach the round of 16. Lang and Novak defeated Arizona's Alejandro Reguant and Carlos Hassey 8-4 in the round of 32 before falling to San Diego's Nico Borter and David Norfeldt 8-5.

Both teams will be back in action at the GCU Invitational from Nov. 1-3 at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale.
