SIMI VALLEY, Calif. – The Grand Canyon men's golf team completed the Bill Cullum Invitational in second place on Tuesday with senior
Trevor Lampson tying for second place individually at Wood Ranch Golf Club.
Lampson broke 70 in each of the three rounds (65, 69 and 69) to finish the tournament at 13 under par. He closed with a birdie and eagle to vault the Lopes into second place at 846 (18 under par), just ahead of San Diego (848), and tie USC's Leon D'Souza and Pepperdine's Clay Feagler for second place.
San Diego State won with a tournament-record score of 824 (40 under par). The individual medalist went to San Diego State's Puwit Anupansuebsai, who also set a tournament record with an 18-under-par score of 198.
GCU senior
T.J. Nolan tied for the lowest third-round score among all players in the tournament on Tuesday. The senior shot a bogey-free 67 to move into a tie for 30th.
Lopes senior
Michael Salazar continued his strong play with a 214 (2 under par) that tied him for 25th place after his victory last week in the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational.
Adam Veenstra played as an individual and also tied for 25th place. The junior had a second-round 68.
Senior
Jake Chanen (218) and sophomore
Matthew Braley (218) tied for 38th place to round out the Lopes' lineup.
With consecutive second-place team finishes, the Lopes were 43 under par in their past two tournaments.
GCU is back in action at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational on Oct. 21-23.
Day 1 recap
GCU was led by Lampson, who recorded nine birdies in his first round to finish at 7 under par. Lampson shot a second-round 69 to finish the day at 10 under par. The senior was in second place and trailed Anupansuebsai of San Diego State.
Salazar continued his strong play with two below-par rounds of 71 to enter the final round at 2 under par.
Braley (144), Chanen (145) and Nolan (149) also contributed for the Lopes while Veenstra carded a 142 total as an individual entrant.
