Both Grand Canyon tennis teams were well represented again in the WAC weekly awards, earning three more honors on Tuesday.
Junior
Emilia Occhipinti won for women's singles and doubles (with junior
Celina Buhr) and the top men's doubles team of junior
Lorenzo Fucile and senior
Mathieu Rajaonah also was selected.
Both teams competed at home over the weekend. The men won both matches against Florida Gulf Coast and Sacramento State and the women split, defeating Southern Utah and falling to Nevada.
Occhipinti competed at the top singles and doubles positions over the weekend. In singles, she defeated Southern Utah's Ghitka Nassik 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 to clinch the team win, a match the Lopes won 5-2. Against Nevada, the junior from Ragusa, Italy won 6-2, 6-2, which tied the score at 2-2 and helped the Lopes get back in the match.
In No. 1 doubles, Occhipinti partnered with Buhr and improved their team-best record to 2-2. Against Southern Utah, the pair were the first to finish a match, winning 6-2 and helping the Lopes clinch the doubles point. On Saturday against Nevada, the pair was the last to finish and won 6-4.
On the men's side, Fucile and Rajaonah were dominant again in winning both matches at the top doubles position and now have a 4-0 record on the season. Against Florida Gulf Coast and Sacramento State, the pair won each match 6-4 en route to helping the Lopes clinch the doubles point in both matches.
