The Grand Canyon women's tennis team after winning in a close 4-3 win against Drake last week, played another nail biter at the GCU Tennis Facility on Friday night winning 5-2 against Southern Utah.
"All I can say is déjà vu," head coach
Greg Prudhomme said. "It was as if we were in the exact same match as last Friday night, a hard fought win against Drake. Southern Utah gave us a great battle, the doubles was tough, and there were battles all around."
GCU jumped out to an early lead thanks to winning the doubles point. Juniors
Emilia Occhipinti and
Celina Buhr won 6-2 at No. 1, and the Italian sophomore's
Martina Lo Pumo and
Ludovica Infantino clinched the point at No. 2 winning 6-3.
Autum Prudhomme and
Celia Morel's match was left unfinished at No. 3 tied 4-4.
Unlike the comeback win against Drake the last time out, the Lopes jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to Morel winning by retirement after winning the first set at No. 4. But the lead was brief as Southern Utah came back winning in straight sets at Nos. 5 and 2.
Tied 2-2 the Lopes won a crucial match at No. 3 with Buhr defeating Daniela Cozzi in straight sets as GCU now led 3-2 with two matches remaining.
At No. 6 Prudhomme, a sophomore from Glendale, forced a third set and then fought off two match point games at 4-5 and 5-6 to force tiebreakers. Occhipinti at No. 1 rallied as well taking the second set after dropping the first set and jumping out to 4-2 lead in the third set.
With Prudhomme up in tiebreakers 4-0, Occhipiniti served for the match and won the third set 6-2 clinching the second straight win for the Lopes. Prudhomme minutes later would close out her match, defeating Charity Sagiao 8-6 in tiebreakers.
When leading 3-2 the Lopes needed both Occhipinti and Prudhomme to comeback after dropping each of their first sets, and each one did that, winning the final two sets and giving the team a 5-2 win.
"We had a little bit of everything," Prudhomme added. "Celia won the first set and got a retirement in the second and we jumped out to a 2-0 lead pretty quick, but little did we know that we would be there for two more hours. I'm real happy with the mental toughness and the fight, the other team didn't quit and for us to match their grit and fight says a lot about our girls. I'm happy to see that performance early in the season and get another win."
The team will have tonight to rest and get ready for Nevada on Kids Day at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
