NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — The Grand Canyon women's tennis team fell 7-0 to Texas A&M in a neutral-site season opener at the Palisades Tennis Center.
"The girls played well today," Lopes head coach
Greg Prudhomme said. "The first match of the season is always a little bit tricky, no matter who you're playing, but it's extra challenging when you are playing a team that finished last year top 30 in the country and is coming back very strong."
Texas A&M was coming off a 4-0 shutout of Utah earlier in the day and continued its hot play against GCU. In doubles, the Lopes were mostly quiet with new pairings getting their first taste of the dual match season. Junior teammates
Emilia Occhipinti and
Celina Buhr played in four matches together during the fall season and lost 6-0 at No. 1 doubles on Saturday. Italian sophomores
Ludovica Infantino and
Martina Lo Pumo teamed up at No. 2 and lost 6-1, giving the Aggies the doubles point and an early advantage heading into singles.
The Lopes played the Aggies tough in singles and competed in several matches. Occhipinti played her first match at No. 1 against the No. 110 ranked singles player in the country, Jayci Goldsmith, and held a 4-1 advantage in the second set after dropping the first set. Goldsmith won five straight games to take the match 6-1, 6-4.
Celia Morel, a junior college transfer competing in her first Division I collegiate match, played at No. 4 and only lost the first set 6-4 before falling in the second set 6-0. Infantino, who only played in six matches last season, pushed her opponent at No. 5 to win six games in the two-set match.
Autum Prudhomme played in only her second singles match of her career, falling at No. 6 in straight sets, and Tatiana Makarova defeated Buhr 6-3, 6-0 on court four to win the fourth point and clinch the win for the Aggies.
"There are some highlights," Prudhomme said. "The girls fought hard and they were competitive in a number of sets up and down the lineup. So, we're looking forward to taking that tough experience into our first home match next week."
The team will kick off its 11-match home schedule against Drake at 3 p.m. Friday at the GCU Tennis Facility.
