The Grand Canyon tennis teams will play at home for the first time this year when the women will face Drake on Friday at 3 p.m. and the men take on UC Riverside in their season opener Saturday at 10 a.m.
The match against the Bulldogs will begin a five-match homestand for the women that will conclude on Feb. 10.
The women began the season last week at the Palisades Tennis Club in Newport Beach, Calif., with a 7-0 loss to Texas A&M in a neutral-site match. The Lopes competed in singles when junior
Emilia Occhipinti held a 4-1 lead in the second set against Jayci Goldsmith, the 110th-ranked player in the country before falling 6-4.
The men will kick off the spring season against the Highlander in a series that dates back to 1958. The two teams have met eight times, with the Lopes holding a 6-2 advantage. GCU has won the past five matchups, including a 4-3 comeback win last season.
After the home match on Saturday, the men's team will travel to Tucson and face Arizona on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The Lopes last played Arizona in 2017, when they lost 4-3, and are looking for their first-ever win against the Wildcats.
