RIO VERDE, Ariz. –
Jake Chanen of the Grand Canyon men's golf team, captured the 94
th Arizona Amateur Championship on Saturday at Tonto Verde Golf Club.
Facing George Markham, the No. 2 seed in match-play, Chanen built a 2-up lead through nine holes, only to see Markham win 10 and 11 to pull even. Chanen would win two of the next three holes which proved to be the difference as he closed out the match 1-up on the 18
th hole.
The Arizona Amateur Championship was a grueling event which saw Chanen play eight rounds of golf over six consecutive days at Tonto Verde Golf Club in Rio Verde. Monday and Tuesday were 18-hole rounds to narrow the field to the top-64. Chanen was the No. 12 seed entering Wednesday's match-play portion.
In match-play, Chanen defeated Isaac Spillum 4&2, Grant Calendar 6&4, and Matt Simone 2-up. A big Friday led to Chanen defeating Matt Simone 3&2 and Hayden Sayre 3&2 to advance to Saturday's final victory over Markham.
Chanen becomes the first ever champion from GCU and joins volunteer assistant
Jesse Mueller (2001 champ) on the list of past champions.
GCU was well represented at the Championship as Chanen was joined by teammates
Matthew Braley,
Nick Hedman and
Trevor Lampson.
