MESA, Ariz.—For the first time in program history, both Grand Canyon tennis teams will participate in the Western Athletic Conference Tennis Tournament. Both teams will face off against Chicago State in the First Round on Friday, the women's team seeded fourth will play at 9 a.m. and the third seeded men's team will follow at 1 p.m.
"I think the vibe is exactly what we want," head coach
Greg Prudhomme said. "It goes without saying that they are all very excited. I pointed out to them the historical moment of being the first Division I men's and women's tennis teams at Grand Canyon to be here on this Thursday pre-tournament practice day as well as the rest of the tournament."
A long and competitive seasons for both teams has been leading up to this weekend and the three matches between GCU and their first Division I NCAA tournament appearance in school history. The women's team (7-14, 2-3) faced tough competition all season long, and the squad with four freshmen in the lineup have grown up as the season has progressed. For the men's team (15-6, 3-2) it has been the opposite with a senior, junior, and a pair of sophomores guiding the Lopes to a 15 win season, tied for the most in a single season in the DI era.
"They've had the ups and downs, the in-betweens, that has given them the experience they'll rely on this weekend," Prudhomme added.
Both teams shutout Chicago State during the regular season, the women won 7-0 to open up the WAC campaign, and the men won 7-0 in their final match of the regular season. Despite the two sweeps and a combined 10-0 record against the Cougars since GCU joined the WAC, Prudhomme and the rest of the team know that nothing can be taken for granted during the tournament.
"Does it give you a little bit of confidence that we've have beaten them in the past? Sure, but this is tournament time and we are treating every match like it's the most important match of the season. So we certainly won't over look them, every day is a new day and they have certainly improved, credit to their coach and the program, and we saw much closer matches on individual lines than in past seasons."
The other first round matchups will include on the women's side No. 3 New Mexico State vs No. 6 Seattle U, and on the men's side No. 4 Seattle U vs No. 5 UTRGV.
