HOMEWOOD, Ill.—The Grand Canyon men's tennis team wrapped up the regular season with a 7-0 statement win at Chicago State. The Lopes (15-6, 3-2), with the win over the Cougars (5-18, 0-5), clinch the third seed in the Western Athletic Conference tournament that begins in less than two weeks. GCU and Chicago State will face each other again in the No. 3 vs. No. 6 match in the first round.
"The guys finished with a strong performance today to close out the WAC regular season matches," Lopes head coach
Greg Prudhomme said. "To get a third 7-0 win in conference play was solid. We were hoping to finish one or two in the regular season, but we at least finished the season strong, and got our 15th win."
GCU was dominant in its final regular season game, winning all but one match against the Cougars. In doubles, the Lopes won at court three with
Freddie Grant and
Leo Andreolli by default as Chicago State didn't have enough players. At court one, the pair of
Lorenzo Fucile and
Mathieu Rajaonah won 6-3 to clinch the point, and
Valentin Lang and
Lucas Grego fell at court two by the same score 6-3.
In singles, the Lopes continued their dominance winning all but one match in straight sets. Andreolli won at No. 6 by default and Grant won 6-1, 6-0 to start things off. The clinching fourth point was won by Fucile at No. 2, his straight set win was his 12th win of the season and he finished the conference season at 4-1. Rajaonah and Grego each won at No. 1 and No. 4, and
Valentin Lang came back at No. 2 after dropping the first set, winning 5-7, 6-4, 10-5.
The 15th win of the season matched the Lopes' Division I record total of last season. The team played well on the road this season, going 14-6 record in away and neutral matches. Its lone home match of the season was a February win against Western New Mexico.
