PHOENIX—It's senior day at the GCU tennis facility on Saturday morning.
Lana Rinaldi,
Kylie Waschuk, and Gregoire Balenci will be honored before the women's team wraps up the regular season against NAU. The Lopes (7-13) will use this match as one final tune up before the WAC conference tournament which starts next weekend.
The pregame senior ceremony will begin at 10:45 with the seniors being honored on the court, and then the match will begin at 11 a.m. with the doubles competition.
The Lopes are coming off the final WAC cluster that was played in Seattle on April 7 and 8. GCU split two matches against UMKC and Seattle U as they finished the conference season at 2-3.
GCU suffered a close 4-3 loss to the Roos, but saw good performances from
Martina Lo Pumo and
Emilia Occhipinti who each won singles matches at No. 2 and No. 3. Waschuk also won her match at No. 6 in straight sets, but UMKC took the match by winning the final singles match of the day at court five.
GCU responded well the next day against host school Seattle U. The Lopes were down early 1-0 after losing the doubles point but came back to win the match 4-3. Once again it all came down to the final singles match and Waschuk clinched the win for the Lopes winning at No. 6 in a tough three set match.
NAU will be a good test for the team as they prepare for the WAC tournament. The Lumberjacks completed a second straight 11-0 season in the Big Sky, and they are currently on a 31 regular season match winning streak against Big Sky opponents. They also defeated Utah State and New Mexico State, both teams GCU lost to during the season.
