DENVER – The Grand Canyon men's golf team is the favorite to capture the Western Athletic Conference Championship on April 23-25 in a vote by the league's head coaches.
The WAC Championship will be held at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas.
Vinnie Murphy is the defending medalist winner and leads the WAC with a 71.0 scoring average.
The Lopes have won three tournaments this season which includes the UMKC Bill Ross Intercollegiate, the NM State Herb Wimberly and the Sac State Invitational.
Rankings wise, GCU has been the top-ranked WAC program during the spring. UMKC started off the season with a better ranking than GCU after the Roos had an impressive opening weekend.
The last time GCU and UMKC were in the same field was at the GCU Invitational. The Lopes finished third and the Roos finished sixth. GCU finished 10 strokes ahead of UMKC. Earlier in the year during the fall season, the Lopes defeated UMKC by six shots in Overland Park, Kansas at the Bill Ross.
GCU received all 36 possible votes in the WAC Coaches Poll. NM State is predicted to finish runner-up, while UMKC is expected to finish third. Rounding out the poll was UTRGV, Utah Valley, defending champ Seattle and Chicago State.
