FINAL RESULTS
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Grand Canyon men's golf team challenged for the title before settling for a second-place finish Sunday at the Pepsi-Cola Classic.
The Lopes entered the final round at Red Hawk Golf Club tied for the lead with tournament host Texas-El Paso. GCU took a brief lead after an early
Trevor Lampson birdie, but UTEP pulled away led with the help of individual winner Aaron Terrazas, who finished 15 under par. The Miners finished with an 855 (9 under par), just 12 strokes ahead of the runner-up Lopes at 867 (3 over par).
GCU finished ahead of WAC rivals Kansas City (872) and New Mexico State (875), who were third and fourth, respectively. UT Rio Grande Valley also was in the field and took sixth at 888.
Senior
Filip Lundell paced a trio of Lopes in the tournament's top 15. Lundell finished with a 214 (2 under par), good for fourth place. Freshman
Matthew Braley (215) was only one stroke beind Lundell in fifth place, while junior
Michael Salazar (221) tied for 14
th place.
GCU junior
Jake Chanen improved each round, finishing with a third-round 72 and a total of 223 to tie for 20th. Lopes junior
Trevor Lampson finished with a 225 to tie for 27th while
T.J. Nolan, playing as an individual, came in with a 226 and a tie for 31st.
GCU is back in action Oct. 25-27 at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif.
