PHOENIX - Head coach
Schellas Hyndman announced an addition to the men's soccer staff for the 2017 season. A veteran of the collegiate coaching ranks, Kevin Doyle is set to join the program for GCU's first postseason-eligible season. He will serve in a role of Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for the program.
"I've known Kevin from when I was at SMU and he was a heck of a player at Creighton," Hyndman said. "I've kept a close eye on his progress. He's worked for some outstanding coaches. He's done a really good job working with those programs and probably has all the experience and capabilities to be a very good head coach. So I feel very fortunate to get a person of his qualities and his experiences."
Doyle comes to Grand Canyon with a long resume of impressive coaching stops in collegiate soccer. He spent the last five seasons on the coaching staff at Air Force Academy. Prior to coaching with the Falcons, Doyle spent three years as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech and six seasons as the top assistant and lead recruiter at Creighton. He also had stints as the top assistant at Penn State, an assistant at William & Mary and an assistant at Mercer.
"I could not be any more grateful or excited to be coaching at Grand Canyon University and with Coach
Schellas Hyndman," Doyle said. "I have known of - and known - Coach Hyndman for 30 years and have always thought the world of him. To be able to work alongside him is truly an honor. Combine that with all that is going on at Grand Canyon with the growth of the university and the excellence in athletics, I don't think there is a better place in the country to be a college soccer coach."
During his playing career, Doyle was a goalkeeper at Creighton. In 1992, he was named Defensive Player of the Year for the Missouri Valley Conference and earned first team All-MVC honors. As a junior, Doyle led the Blue Jays to a No. 1 national ranking and a 16-2-1 record on the season. His name is up and down the Creighton recordbooks.
Grand Canyon's first season as a fully-eligible member of the NCAA Division I ranks begins in late August.
