Tennis gears up for three big matches this weekend

PHOENIX - The GCU men's and women's tennis teams will be in action this weekend. The men travel to Colorado for two matches, one against Northern Colorado and one versus Air Force. The women's team will make the short trip to Tucson to compete against the University of Arizona Wildcats.

"This will be our first matchup with Northern Colorado," Prudhomme said. "We're looking forward to playing a new team. It will also be exciting to play Air Force on the road. We've always had very competitive matches with them so we're expecting another competitive match and we'll be ready for the fight."

Northern Colorado is 0-2 on the season as the Bears have dropped contests against Air Force and Abilene Christian. The Lopes will begin play at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28 in Greeley, Colorado. It will be the first meeting between the teams.

The Falcons have a record of 2-1 this year with wins against Northern Colorado and Colorado State-Pueblo. Abilene Christian narrowly defeated the Falcons 4-3, handing them their first defeat. The Air Force match will take place at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29.

"We're looking forward to the U of A match," head coach Greg Prudhomme noted. "It's always great to play the best in the country. Just like the schedule we built for the men, if we want to be one of the best teams in the country, we have to compete against them to gain the experience and continue to build for the future. We're certainly the underdogs going into the match but I know the girls are going to fight and anything can happen if they give it their best."

The Wildcats recently participated in the National Collegiate Tennis Classic and are one of the best tennis programs in the Southwest. U of A competes in the PAC 12 and will be a great test for GCU early in the season. The match will be played on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 2 p.m.
