GREELEY, Colo. - The Grand Canyon men's tennis team is on its first official win streak of the young season, topping Northern Colorado 6-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Lopes claimed the doubles point by winning two of the three matches while claiming five of the six singles matchups. GCU improves to 2-2 on the season with consecutive victories after last Sunday's defeat of Incarnate Word.
"The guys did a great job today on the road in the altitude indoors," head coach Greg Prudhomme said. "Those are all elements we don't spend a lot of time dealing with. The guys did a good job showing they can make the adjustments."
GCU won the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matchups to clinch the doubles point and take the 1-0 lead in the match. The doubles duo of
Lorenzo Fucile and
Valentin Lang recorded the most dominant doubles victory, winning 6-2.
The six singles players took the momentum from the doubles victory and continued GCU's winning ways. All five of the Lopes' singles victories came in sweeps.
"The team came out with a lot of energy and good teamwork to earn the doubles point," Prudhomme said. "They kept that momentum by winning the next three matches that finished quickly to get to the 4-0 lead. Northern Colorado put up a good fight, but our guys were definitely ready for the battle today."
By virtue of his 7-5, 6-2 victory,
Francois Musitelli clinched the match for GCU, giving the Lopes their decisive fourth team point.
"We'll have a quick turnaround tonight and be ready for a tough battle tomorrow with Air Force in similar conditions," Prudhomme concluded.
Grand Canyon makes the two-hour trip to Colorado Springs for tomorrow's matchup with the Falcons. The match is set to get underway at 11 a.m.
