WACO, Texas – The GCU men's tennis team picked up their first win of the fall season on Sunday afternoon by defeating Incarnate Word 5-2. The Lopes improve their record to 1-2 for the year.
"Our guys did great today adjusting from playing indoors last night to outdoors this morning," assistant coach
Amit Maharaj said. "We were able to play at a high level despite the tough windy conditions."
The Lopes started the contest in good fashion with two wins in doubles play to clench the team point. The pair of
Francois Musitelli and
Mathieu Rajaonah defeated Dyer and Ahmic of UIW 6-2 at No. 2.
Lorenzo Fucile and
Valentin Lang swept Vatandilok and Vander Hedien 6-0 at No. 3 to give GCU the early advantage.
In singles play, four Lopes picked up victories. Musitelli continued his impressive outing by making quick work of Vatandiok on court 2, winning 6-2, 6-2. Likewise, Fucile did the same as he won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 over Lissanevitch.
Justin Cvitanovic and Gregorie Balenci also earned wins for GCU on courts 5 and 6.
"It's good to get our first win of the season but we won't stop there," Maharaj added. "Our guys are hungry and they want more. We will take the experience we got this weekend and get ready to play at altitude next week."
The Lopes will hit the road again next weekend for two contests in Colorado. GCU will face Northern Colorado on Saturday, Jan. 28 and Air Force on Sunday, Jan. 29.
