CARSON, Calif. – Winning will be nothing new to Grand Canyon men's soccer incoming freshman
Hector Montalvo as he was a part of the FC Dallas U-18 team that won the US Soccer Development Academy National Championship.
As a key member of FC Dallas' backline, Montalvo was a part of a defense that held the Vancouver Whitecaps FC to just one goal in the championship match. The win propelled FC Dallas to repeat as champions and help the academy go on a 12-0-0 in their U-16 and U-18 teams.
It wasn't easy for FC Dallas as they had to come back from an early deficit as the Whitecaps FC took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute but after the early goal, Montalvo and FC Dallas' defense held strong, not allowing another goal. Montalvo came close to tying the match to end the first half with a header in the 43rd minute that just went over the crossbar.
FC Dallas continued to fight and battle, looking for the equalizing goal and late in the 81st minute they delivered a goal to tie the game. Not settling for the match to head to penalty kicks, Montalvo helped redirect a ball inside the box to keep Vancouver from scoring and in the 106th minute FC Dallas would score, to be crowned as champions for the second straight year.
Montalvo brings a winning mentality to GCU as he concludes his high school career with a US Soccer Development Academy National Championship and also helped the United States U-19 soccer team claim the Slovakia Cup in defeating Russia.
