SENICA, Slovakia – Future Grand Canyon men's soccer player Hector Montalvo had the opportunity to represent United States at the 2016 Slovakia Cup. The soon to be Lope was a part of the U.S. squad that was crowned Slovakia Cup Champions, after defeating Russia 2-1.
Before the Championship match against Russia, Montalvo had the honor of dawning the captain sleeve in the final group match against host country Slovakia. Montalvo played in all four matches as a defender. In the championship match, Russia striked first scoring an early goal in the 13th minute, the U.S. quickly responded with a goal just a minute after Russia's goal. After the Russia's first goal, Montalvo and the U.S. backline shutdown Russia's attack holding them scoreless for the final 77 minutes. The U.S. would score in the 65th minute, to be crowned champions of the Slovakia Cup.
Montalvo is well known across the country as the native of El Paso, Texas has played for the United States U-19 National team and was a 2015 US Soccer Development Academy National Champion. As a central defender, Montalvo also trained with the full Mexican National Team while the squad was in Dallas.
Montalvo, a member of FC Dallas, will join GCU soccer this upcoming season as one of eight signees in the Class of 2016.
