SANTA BARBARA – The Grand Canyon men's golf team ended the OGIO UC Santa Barbara Intercol Tournament with an exclamation point, moving all the way up to second place to close out the tournament. As a team, GCU shot +8 for the tournament and they were led by
Brett Wilson, finishing in seventh place at even-par for the tournament.
GCU found success at the Sandpiper Golf Course as four of the five GCU golfers placed in the top-15. Wilson's scorecard was consistent in all tournament, shooting 72 all three rounds to remain at even for the tournament, just one of seven players in the tournament to not shoot over par.
Right behind Wilson in the player leaderboard was reigning Western Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week,
Alex Kline. While Wilson finished in seventh place, Kline was directly behind his teammate in eighth place. After a 74 in the first round, Kline would shoot one of the lowest rounds in the second round, shooting -3 under and after another 74 in the final round, Kline would end the tournament at +1.
Just two strokes behind Kline was teammate
Billy Comeaux at +3 for the tournament, putting the junior in a tie for 12th place. Comeaux's lowest round of golf came in the second round, shooting a 71 and then ended the tournament with a 76. Comeaux was one stroke ahead of
Jake Byrum, as the senior from Scottsdale, Ariz. moved up three spots on the final day to finish in a tie for 15th place. Byrum improved every time as the tournament progressed, shooting a 75 in the first round, and then cut his score by two strokes in the second to 73. On the final day, Byrum shot his best round of the tournament, shooting even par to end the tournament at +4.
GCU's final member,
Hayden Webb, finished in 46th place after shooting +16 in the final tournament before the WAC Championship. The Lopes had the second best score on Par 4's throughout the tournament, shooting +15 as a team as well as the third lowest score on Par 5's at -14. Forty-three birdies on the course, was the third highest from any team throughout the tournament.
