SANTA BARBARA – The Grand Canyon men's golf team got off to a great start in the OGIO UC Santa Barbara Intercol tournament finishing in fourth place out of nine teams. After the first round, the Lopes shot +5 as a team led by
Billy Comeaux and
Brett Wilson currently tied in sixth place.
The Lopes had all five players place in the top-25, including three in the top-20. Comeaux and Wilson were two of 15 players to not shoot over par in the first round. The GCU duo would shoot even-par, placing them in sixth for the tournament. Comeaux played exceptional golf on Par 4's posting the second lowest score, shooting -2, just one of four players to shoot under par in the first round on Par 4 holes.
Reigning WAC Golfer of the Week,
Alex Kline, shot a 74, putting the senior at +2 for the first round and in a tie for 19th place. Kline shot -2 on Par 5 holes, the fourth lowest score in the first round.
Hayden Webb was one stroke behind Kline, shooting a 75to put Webb in a tie for 24th place. Joining Webb in 24th place is
Jake Byrum, shooting a 75 to put GCU at 293 as a team, just six strokes behind the leading team Cal Poly.
The Lopes posted the second lowest score on Par 5 holes, shooting -7 as a team, four strokes back from Cal Poly as well the third most pars throughout the first round with 82 pars.
The tournament will conclude on Tuesday, April 12th, at the Sandpiper Golf Course.
