PHOENIX – After splitting a pair of matches with No. 13 Lewis University last weekend, the GCU men's volleyball team returns to Phoenix to host the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders. The Lopes will play at Antelope Gymnasium at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5 and again at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6.
Grand Canyon is 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the MIVA this season. Pacing the Lopes attack are outside hitters
Gerrard Lipscombe and
Shalev Saada. Both Lipscombe and Saada recorded double-digit kills in the win over Lewis on Saturday, Jan. 30. Libero
Sky Engleman continues to lead the defensive front, amassing 74 digs this season. Setter
Michael Milstein has also emerged as a leader from his setter position, adding 58 total assists last weekend.
Head Coach Matt Werle acknowledged that the Lewis win was important for the team, but noted that the Lopes must continue to improve and capitalize on the positive momentum.
"We have reflected on this past weekend at Lewis and we are pleased with the win on Saturday night there," Werle said, "but that does not define us. We are still trying to create a consistent identity and hoping we can build from our Saturday win."
NJIT is currently 0-5 this season, most recently being defeated by IPFW in five sets last weekend. The Highlanders are led by TJ Jurko, an outside hitter with a team-high 47 kills for the year. Head coach Danny Goncalves is entering his second season at the helm. Last year, the Highlanders finished 11-13.
"We are definitely looking forward to being back in front of our own crowd," Werle added. "NJIT is a good team and they are coached well. We have been plagued by illness this week and will need everyone that is healthy to really rise to the occasion this weekend."
