Phoenix, AZ – The GCU men's volleyball team returned home this weekend and added another win to their record. The Lopes defeated the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders on Friday, Feb. 5 and improved to 7-3 for the season. Grand Canyon won in four sets by scores of 25-17, 29-27, 21-25, and 25-20.
The Lopes will face off against NJIT again tomorrow evening and head coach Matt Werle noted that the team will be looking to make some adjustments.
"I'm pleased with our offensive production tonight," Werle noted. "We did not pass nearly as well as we would have liked, but our pin attackers did a nice job of still finding a way to score. We will need to play a more disciplined game tomorrow evening."
Outside hitter Gerrard Lipscombe led the Lopes with 20 kills for the match. Lipscombe only committed one hitting error for an impressive .559 attack percentage. He also added 9 digs and 3 blocks to round out his performance.
In the first set, GCU had zero attacking errors and knocked down 12 kills on 19 attempts. The Lopes hit .342 for the match and committed only 13 attack errors compared to 30 for the Highlanders. The offense continued to click with setter Michael Milstein adding 45 assists.
Tanner Maxwell and Ashton King each contributed 7 kills while Shalev Saada added 6 of his own. Libero Sky Engleman led the Lopes defense with 10 digs and Christian Ward was tough at the net, leading GCU with 7 blocks.
GCU will face off with the Highlanders again at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6.
