Â

Air Force distanced themselves from the field despite only one event win on the evening. On the women's side, the Lopes moved up to fifth place with 306 points. Northern Arizona leads the women's team competition with 546.5 points with 13 events remaining in the championships.
Â
Mark Nikolaev continued his torrid freshman campaign, collecting a conference title in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 46.30, breaking his own school record of 46.33 set earlier this season at the Shamrock Invitational in January. Nikolaev's mark was a conference and WAC championships record, not to mention was a D1 "B" standard mark.
Â
Grand Canyon had a clean sweep of the 100 backstroke when Ortiz followed up Nikolaev's win with one of her own in the event, as she and teammate
Iryna Glavnyk went 1-2 overall on the women's side. Ortiz took the lead from the start and edged out Glavnyk 54.16 to 54.41, both D1 "B" Standards. The pair each finished over a second ahead of the rest of the field.
Â
Ortiz's win was her second of the day, following a dominating win in the 400 yard medley. Her mark of 4:16.14 was nearly four seconds ahead of second place and was another D1 "B" Standard for Ortiz. Sophomore
Yara Fakhry won the consolation round of the event, to help add 29 points to the team total for the Lopes.
Â
Not to be outdone, Nikolaev wrapped up the day of competition with his second event win of the evening, combining with
Youssef El Kamash,
Daniil Antipov and
Mazen El Kamash, to shatter the school record in the 400 medley relay by over three seconds. The Lopes' mark of 3:08.80 broke the conference and WAC Championships record, previously held by UNLV from the 2014 WAC Championship meet. It was the third relay victory for the Grand Canyon men of the meet.
Â
Other notable performances from Friday evening's action came from
Iegor Lytvenok, who added a fourth place finish in the 400 medley to kick off the evening session of the meet. Lytvenok hit a D1 "B" Standard while teammate
