GCU falls to Utah State

LOGAN, Utah – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team wrapped up its two match weekend in Logan, Utah with a matchup against Utah State. GCU saw its three-match winning streak snapped as they fell to the Aggies 7-0. GCU is now 3-2 this season.

"The guys had a tough day against Utah State," head coach Greg Prudhomme said. "The score definitely was not indicative of how we played today. It's very surprising they got a 7-0 score because several matches could have gone either way."

GCU's lone win of the day came from the squad's top duo in doubles, Felix Schueller and Alexander Roggenkamp. On court one, Schueller and Roggenkamp were able to take down Andrew Nakajima and Luis Lopez 6-4. Schueller and Roggenkamp have now won two straight doubles matches on court one.

The Lopes forced one match to three-sets and two tiebreakers. Reigning WAC Player of the Week, Mitch Maroscher, went up against Jaime Barajas who went into the match ranked No. 9 in the ITA Mountain Region. Maroscher took the first set over Barajas 6-3 but Barajas came back to take the final two sets 6-4, 6-4. On court two, Schueller forced a tie breaker in his first set against Jonas Maier but would fall in two sets 7-6 (7-2), 6-3. The other tie breaker was on court six between Adrian Legarreta and Romai Ugarte. In the first set Legarreta forced a tie breaker but Ugarte took the set 7-6 (7-3) and the second set 7-5.

"We knew things would go back-and-forth going into the match," Prudhomme said. "It was just one of those days that all the close matches went the opponent's way. We were in every match and had good opportunities so we have to work harder because we have players that can beat a nationally ranked team."
