Lopes cruise to fourth win of the season

PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team hosted its first home match of the season and the men could have not asked for a better result sweeping Western New Mexico 7-0. GCU won all nine matches played against the Mustangs as they improve to 4-2 this season.

"We had a good day on the courts today," head coach Greg Prudhomme said. "The men will try to use that momentum going into the big match against No. 6 USC on Saturday. We were the favorites going into the match but it wasn't that long ago that we would have tough matches, and even an occasional loss. It's nice to see how far we've come in the past few years."

Starting GCU's winning streak was Mathieu Ounanian and Mathieu Rajaonah on court with the dominating 6-0 win. Clinching the doubles point for the Lopes was Mitch Maroscher and Adrian Legarreta on court two with the 6-2 victory. Felix Schueller and Alexander Roggenkamp ended doubles with a 6-2 victory on court one.

GCU would sweep all six matches in singles play and it started off with the Lopes' No. 1 player, Maroscher, as he took down Jean-Laurent Pageault 6-3 and retired in the second set. Next was Rajaonah as he moved up to court four against the Mustangs for the first time this season and won in back-to-back 6-2 sets. Clinching the match for the Lopes against WNMU was Justin Cvitanovic on court six for his first appearance in the lineup this season. Cvitanovic took down Pablo Santibanez 6-1, 6-3 to give GCU its fourth victory of the season.

Grand Canyon won the final three matches left as Roggenkamp was the fourth match to finish, defeating Vladimir Gnilozubov 7-5, 6-1 and Legarreta won on court five 6-4, 6-2. The final win of the day would come from Schueller in three sets against Sascha Brechtel 2-6, 6-2, 6-0.

GCU will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 6, as they travel to California to face USC.
