LOS ANGELES – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team faced its toughest task of the tournament on Saturday as they faced Southern California. The Trojans entered the match as the No. 6 team in the country and the Lopes were able to come away with one victory against one of the nation's best. GCU fell to USC 6-1 and is now 4-3 this season.
"The guys worked hard today on the court," head coach Greg Prudhomme said. "Considering the situation and going into the No. 6 team's place I thought we competed very well. We are two points point away from winning a three-set match so we have to bring that mindset that we can win every match."
After dropping the doubles point to USC, the Lopes fought extremely hard in all six singles as matches as three of the six matches went to three-sets. GCU's win would come on court three from
Alexander Roggenkamp as he was able to take down Laurens Verboven in three sets. Roggenkamp fell in the first set 6-3 but the senior from Germany continued to battle and forced a third when he took the second set 6-3. In the final set to come away with the point, Roggenkamp defeated Verboven 10-8 to come away with the victory.
Felix Schueller and
Adrian Legarreta were both able to force their matches to three-sets on courts two and six.
"We are happy with a victory and winning multiple sets but today showed that we can compete with the nation's best," Prudhomme said. "This was a good experience for our team and we will build off of this match."
GCU will return home to action a week from today, Feb. 13, to take on UC Santa Barbara at Paseo Racquet Center.
