PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team started its three match homestand with a matchup against UC Santa Barbara. The Lopes were able to come away with two victories in singles but GCU fell to the Gauchos 5-2. GCU is now 4-4 this season.
"We had a tough day on the courts against a nationally ranked opponent," head coach Greg Prudhomme said. "We knew it was going to be a tough match against Santa Barbara as they were ranked top-50 in the country. Our guys started off well and competed great in doubles."
Despite dropping all three doubles matches to UCSB, the Lopes were in every match that could have gone either way. Two of three matches GCU held match point but went to tiebreakers. On court one,
Felix Schueller and
Alexander Roggenkamp found themselves in a battle with Nathan Eshmade and Miles Seeman. Schueller and Roggenkamp pushed the UCSB duo to the limit but fell short of coming away with a win. The Lopes also found them in a nail biter on court as
Mitch Maroscher and
Adrian Legarreta took on Nicolas Moreno and Chase Masciorini. GCU had match point but were unable to capitalize as UCSB clinched the doubles point 7-6 (5).
GCU would come away with two victories in singles from Maroscher and
Mathieu Rajaonah. Maroscher faced the Gauchos' top player, Eshmade and Maroscher was able to come out on top. After dropping the first set, Maroscher regrouped to take the final two sets 6-3, 6-4 for GCU's first victory. The final victory of the day for the Lopes came on court four from freshman
Mathieu Rajaonah as he was able to defeat Oliver Sec 7-5, 3-6, 10-6.
GCU will be back in action next Thursday, Feb. 18, as they host Nevada.
