Grand Canyon received a pitching gem from
Coley Bruns and a host of relievers to defeat Tennessee 1-0 at Lindsey Nelson Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn.
The win improved GCU to 11-5 overall and 4-2 on the road. Tennessee fell to 5-5.
Bruns (2-0) stole the show, tossing 6.1 scoreless innings, while allowing only four hits. He fanned two and walked one. The mound exploits did not end there for the Lopes as four relievers combined for 2.2 scoreless frames.
Jake Repavich pitched 2.0 scoreless; while
Mick Vorhof was called on to get the final out of the game, earning his third save of the season.
"Coley pitched a really nice game and did a great job of making big pitches to keep us in the game," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "The bullpen came in and got some really big outs at the end of the game."
GCU plated the only run of the game in the fifth inning, using a little small ball in doing so.
Garrison Schwartz reached on an error to lead off the inning and after a walk to
Matt Haggerty, moved to third on sacrifice bunt by
Rouric Bridgewater.
Humberto Aranda would then drive home the game's lone run on groundout to short.
"We scored one and typically that will not hold up," added Stankiewicz. "But we pitched well and played great defense to minimize their chances. Bridgewater did a great job with his sac bunt, typically a guy we would not bunt. But he did well with that and then Humberto did a nice job getting the ball in play to get us that run."
The Volunteers threatened to tie the game in the 9
th when Nick Senzel led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.
Ruben Rincon got Jeff Moberg to fly out, which moved Senzel to third with two outs. Vorhof then entered the game with runners on first and third, quickly ending the threat and game with a strike out of Jordan Rodgers.
The two teams will close out the three-game series tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. (AZ time).
