Grand Canyon split a doubleheader today against Chicago State at Cougar Stadium in Chicago, Ill. The Antelopes dropped game one, 3-1, before rallying for a 4-1 win in the second game.
GCU's record now stands at 15-13, 4-1 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Cougars are now 7-17, 1-4 in the conference.
Andrew Naderer (3-3) started and took the loss in the opener after going 7.0 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. He fanned six without any walks.
Mick Vorhof tossed an inning of scoreless relief.
Chicago State jumped out to a 3-0 lead over with two runs in the third and a run in the seventh.
GCU's lone tally came in the eighth on an infield RBI single by
Brandon Smith. The run was setup by a
Paul Panaccione walk and
Chad De La Guerra single.
Panaccione led the offense with two hits.
GCU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two, as De La Guerra tripled and was brought home by a Smith single.
After the Cougars tied the game at 1-1 in the second, the Lopes took the lead for good with two in the third.
David Walker led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a ground-rule double by Panaccione. De La Guerra then grounded out to first, scoring Walker. A
Matt Haggerty sac fly scored Panaccione.
Walker and Panaccione each had two walks.
Coley Bruns (4-1) pitched a complete game, allowing only one run on five hits. He fanned 10, a start after striking out 11.
Grand Canyon will wrap up the three-game set with Chicago State with a 10 a.m. (AZ time) first pitch tomorrow. The Lopes will then return home for seven straight, beginning with a game on Tuesday vs. Loyola Marymount. First Pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Go to
