The Grand Canyon University women's tennis team (5-6) defeated Texas-Pan American (6-8) at the NMSU Tennis Center in Las Cruces, N.M., today. They won the match 5-2.
In doubles, GCU fell short 2-1 to award the Broncs the point.
Priscilla Annoual and
Tatum Prudhomme won their match 8-3 on the first court over Katia Stavroulaki and Reegan Greenwood.
Alexandra Petrzalkova and
Silvia Tumova came up just short 8-6 in their campaign on the second court whileÂ
Lana Rinaldi and
Lana Macukat were defeated 8-3 on the third.
"We had a close doubles point," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "We got the point at number one quickly with the win by Tatum and Priscilla, but dropped the number three court. Alexandra and Silvia were trailing the whole set on the second court but were almost able to get back in it at the end, so we had to start down a point. That makes the win extra good when you can come from behind."
In singles, the Lopes went 5-1, with all of their victories being won in straight sets.
"We won the first set on all six courts so the girls were really mentally tough and shook off the doubles point quickly," explained Prudhomme. "Although many of the second sets were tighter than the first, our girls hung tough at the end and closed out the match."
In the opening set, Grand Canyon only gave up a total of 12 games across the board.Â
Annoual earned her fourth straight singles win in her match against Stavroulaki 6-3, 6-4. The win took her season record to 7-3.
Petrzalkova picked up her sixth win of the season while Prudhomme, Rinaldi, and Macukat each earned their fifth.Â
Tumova had the lone three-set match for GCU, winning the opening set over Christel Amsallem 6-1. In the second set, she fell 6-3, before playing out the tiebreaker for the third set. She was defeated in the final set.
"It's nice to start off conference play with a win and to defeat a team we beat last year with some good play," Prudhomme concluded. "We have an early one in the morning. We'll get the girls fed, stretched, and ready to get out there tomorrow morning and do it again."
Grand Canyon will continue their competition in Las Cruces, N.M., tomorrow at 7 a.m. against Kansas City before returning to Phoenix for home matches on Sunday and Monday against Idaho State. The matches will be played at Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale at 12 p.m. and 10 a.m., respectively.
