The Grand Canyon University women's tennis team (6-6) defeated Missouri-Kansas City (6-9) with a 7-0 sweep today in Las Cruces, N.M.
"The girls played great after a quick turnaround from yesterday," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "They had a convincing 7-0 win against UMKC to get another conference win so we were definitely happy with the way they played and with the result."
The Lopes closed out the doubles point with wins on all three courts.
Priscilla Annoual and
Tatum Prudhomme won their match on the first court 8-1. On the second and third courts, both matches were won 8-4.
Alexandra Petrzalkova and
Silvia Tumova competed on the second court while
Lana Macukat and
Lana Rinaldi competed on the third.
"We improved on our doubles performance from yesterday and made a couple adjustments to get the point," Prudhomme explained. "We carried that momentum into the singles. The UMKC girls definitely put up a good fight in some of the sets."
Five out of six singles matches were won in two-sets. Three of the Lopes had to stave off 7-5 attempts by the Roos to earn their straight sets victories.
"Tatum and Alexandra each had to fight off a 7-5 second set to put away their matches," Prudhomme continued. "Lana Rinaldi had to get over her first set 7-5 to earn the straight sets win. Lana Macukat was the lone three-set player and she did a good job coming from down a set and 2-4 in the second set before she turned it around and then won the 10-point tiebreaker."
"It was another good day for the women's tennis team and we look forward to keeping the winning streak going when we compete at home tomorrow," concluded Prudhomme.
Grand Canyon will return home to face Idaho State tomorrow at 12 p.m. at Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale, Ariz. They will also take on Idaho State on Monday at 10 a.m. and fans are encouraged to come check out the matches. A full recap will be available at
