The Grand Canyon baseball team dropped a pair of games to Oklahoma State, 3-2 and 11-4, today at Reynolds Stadium in Stillwater, Okla.
The losses drop GCU to 11-8 overall. Oklahoma State improved to 13-6.
GCU dropped the opener, a contest that was played over two days. The clubs began the series on Friday night, with the game being postponed after the first inning with the score tied 2-2. The game resumed today with two new starting pitchers and the only run of the contest coming in the Cowboy second inning when they pushed across what would be the game-winning run on a RBI triple by Jacob Chappel. The Lopes threatened in the ninth putting runners on second and third via a
Thomas Lerouge single and
Greg Saenz double, with one out, but were unable to plate a run.
"We had opportunities in the game, having bases loaded, no outs in the first inning of the first game and only getting two there," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "We had an opportunity in the ninth as well. Two situations where we needed to be better offensively and committed to contact to get us a chance to score a run, but we didn't."
Coley Bruns was the game 1 pitcher when play resumed today and went 7.0 innings, allowing only a run on six hits. He fanned five and walked one.
"Coley pitched a great game, it was unfortunate we couldn't get him some run support," added Stankiewicz. "He pitched well enough to win for sure."
Garrison Schwartz and
Paul Panaccione each had two hits as the Lopes outhit the Cowboys 9-7.
In the nightcap the Cowboy offense erupted early, scoring three runs in both the first and second innings to propel them to the sweep. After falling behind 3-0, GCU would answer with three of their own in the top of the second, with
Humberto Aranda recording a two-run double and Lerouge a RBI single.
After their three-run second, OSU would add two runs in the third and fifth, to go along with a single run in the seventh.
Cameron Brendel was charged with the loss, allowing six earned runs on six hits in 1.1 innings.
Jake Repavich,
Ethan Evanko,
Zebastian Valenzuela and
Josh Walker all saw action out of the pen.
Offensively in game two, the Lopes had 11 hits and were led by
Brandon Smith's 3-for-4 day.
Rouric Bridgewater had two hits.
"They scored and we answered and it was nice to see our guys punch back," said Stankiewicz. "They scored three again and we got caught on our heels a bit and didn't stay in the game. They are a real good ball club and do things well. They were in a Super Regional last year and a top-10 team to begin this year. Tomorrow we look forward to another challenge and look to come out with some fight and come out of here with a result."
The two clubs will close out their three-game set with a game tomorrow at 11 a.m. (AZ time). GCU has a game at UNLV at 3 p.m. (AZ) on Tuesday before returning home for the WAC series opener against North Dakota on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. (AZ).
