The Grand Canyon University women's tennis team (0-3) was defeated by UTEP (1-1) in Albuquerque, N.M., today, falling short 5-2.
"The girls lost a really close one today," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "It's a little disappointing to lose the match, of course, and we feel that we had good chances to win. At the same time, when you put two close teams together the results can fall back and forth. Last year we beat UTEP, but we had to win four three-set matches and this year we also went into several three-set matches so it shows how close our teams are. This year they just came out on top."
The Lopes came out strong, earning the doubles point with wins at the second and third slots.
Silvia Tumova and
Alexandra Petrzalkova snagged the victory 6-4, while
Lana Macukat and
Lana Rinaldi were able to win theirs 7-5.
At the first position,
Priscilla Annoual and
Tatum Prudhomme narrowly lost their match, losing in a tiebreaker.
"There were definitely some positives that came out of it—we got our first doubles point win," Prudhomme explained. "We certainly had the odds stacked against us when we played against New Mexico on their home turf and then No. 23 South Carolina, so it was good to get that doubles point today. We won it 2-3 and at number one we lost in a close tiebreaker, so that was certainly positive."
In singles, Macukat netted the second team point for GCU, defeating Daphne Visscher in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
Annoual, Petrzalkova, and Rinaldi all had three-set matches against their opponents. Annoual and Petrzalkova each won their opening sets, but UTEP fought back in the second. Annoual lost her match to Davina Meza 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, while Petrzalkova was defeated by Lois Wagenvoort 6-2, 5-7, 4-6.
Rinaldi came up just short in a narrow loss to Matilda Tench that opened with Rinaldi winning the first set's tiebreaker. Tench came back to win the second set 7-5. The pair battled out the third set to force another tiebreaker before UTEP earned the point.
"The players fought on all six courts all the way to the end," Prudhomme said. "They had a great attitude and effort, but UTEP battled tough. They came back in four of the matches. We had slightly different conditions this time, but overall we learned a lot and we'll continue to get better from match-to-match. We'll get ready for the next one tomorrow after our drive down to Silver City."
Grand Canyon will face Western New Mexico tomorrow in Silver City, N.M., at 10 a.m. A full recap of the match will be available at
