The Grand Canyon University women's tennis team (1-3) earned a shutout win over Western New Mexico (0-1) today in Silver City, N.M.
"The girls did a great job today," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "They had to bounce back quickly after a tough loss yesterday against UTEP."
In doubles, they opened the day with three wins.
Priscilla Annoual and
Tatum Prudhomme won their match 6-4 at the first position while
Silvia Tumova and
Alexandra Petrzalkova snagged the 6-1 win at second.
Lana Macukat and
Lana Rinaldi finished their match 6-3.
"Playing at an altitude of 6,000 feet is certainly not what we usually play in, so the girls did a really good job of getting their bearings early and earning the doubles point by sweeping all three matches," explained Prudhomme.
In singles, five out of six matches were won in straight sets. Macukat earned her second straight sets win while Rinaldi and Petrzalkova each picked up their second wins of the spring.
"We got off to really good starts in singles," Prudhomme said. "Some players were applying things that they learned over the last few tough losses to today's match. We were able to sweep all nine courts, so this was a good match."
Annoual bounced back from losing the second set of her match to win the third set tiebreaker.
"Priscilla did a good job of shaking off the second set loss by closing out the 10-point tiebreaker 10-2 to cap off the day," Prudhomme concluded. "We will build some momentum from this win and get ready for our next matches on the road."
Grand Canyon will travel to Spokane, Wash. to face Eastern Washington at 9 a.m. on Feb. 20 and Gonzaga at 1 p.m. on Feb. 21. A full recap of the event will be available at
