The Grand Canyon University women's tennis team (2-3) netted a 4-3 win over Eastern Washington (2-6) in Spokane, Wash., today.
"The girls had a great, gritty win on the road today," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "They played on four rubberized indoor courts where if you went back too far behind the baseline you were actually playing from the running track." Â
In doubles, teammates
Lana Rinaldi and
Lana Macukat won the third court's match 6-1, but Eastern Washington defeated Grand Canyon 6-4 at both the first and second slots to secure the doubles win.
Grand Canyon battled back in singles, with
Tatum Prudhomme and
Alexandra Petrzalkova gaining each of their victories in two sets to give the Lopes a 2-1 lead. Prudhomme defeated Erin Blessing 6-2, 6-1 while Petrzalkova won her match 7-5, 6-4 over Dani Young.
"The opposing team fought hard," Prudhomme explained. "They jumped on us early and they got the doubles point, so we had to come from behind. Tatum and Alexandra got us off to great starts in singles by getting straight set victories. We then found ourselves in a dogfight going into three sets on all of the other courts."
Macukat fell short in the opening set against Katrina Domingo 6-0, but came back to win the next two 6-2, 6-1.
Priscilla Annoual faced Janaya Smith in a long three-setter. Annoual won the first set 6-1, but Smith made a comeback in the second to force a tiebreaker. After falling short in the second set's tiebreaker, Annoual triumphed in the third set, winning the match in another tiebreaker.
"When we finally got our fourth point, Priscilla had to save matches points and win a third set tiebreaker 9-7," Prudhomme said.
Rinaldi and
Silvia Tumova fell short in two close three-setters.
"Today was a great character and confidence builder to be able to come on the road, playing in a different situation—coming from behind after dropping the doubles point and then win in a dramatic fashion," said Prudhomme. "We'll have a short rest this evening and see if we can come out and do it again tomorrow against Gonzaga."
The Lopes take on Gonzaga tomorrow at 12 p.m. in Spokane, Wash. A full recap will be available at
