The Grand Canyon University women's tennis team (2-4) fell short in a close match to Gonzaga (6-0) today in Spokane, Wash. They were defeated 4-3.
"The girls lost a heartbreaker today," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "As close as our win was yesterday, that's as close as our loss was today. The girls fought within one game of getting the win today against a strong Gonzaga team."
In doubles, the Lopes earned wins at the first and third positions to secure the doubles point. Teammates
Priscilla Annoual and
Tatum Prudhomme won their match 6-4, while
Lana Rinaldi and
Lana Macukat tallied their fourth straight win of the season (6-4).
"We did a fantastic job of bouncing back quickly after last night and winning the doubles point," Prudhomme continued. "It was great to get the point off of a team as good as them to get that lead going into the singles and then at the top of the lineup we had some really exciting matches."
In singles, three matches were won quickly by the Bulldogs to take the score to 3-1. GCU battled back to force the third set in three matches, with Annoual and Tatum each winning their singles matches to place the score at 3-3.
"After dropping the first set, Priscilla came back and won her match 6-2, 6-2," explained Prudhomme. "Tatum got the first set and lost the second. She then was down 0-2 in the third and battled back to win her third set which put us within one match of the win. The other team played really strong at four, five, and six, so we didn't really get much of a chance to get in those matches."
Silvia Tumova had the final three-setter for the Lopes, facing a tough match against Kylie Peek.
"Then at number three Siliva got off to a good start in the first," Prudhomme continued. "The other girl raised her game in the second but we got off to a good lead in the third set, so things were looking like we were going to pull off the win. The home crowd got behind their player after that and helped her get through narrowly at the end 7-5."
"It's tough to lose it that close especially when you get a chance to knock off a good team like that and get it on your record, but the girls fought really hard and this was a great road trip to have two close matches on," Prudhomme said.
Grand Canyon will travel to Honolulu, Hawaii to face Hawai'i on Feb. 26 at 12 p.m. and San Diego State on Feb. 27 at 8 a.m.
"It's a great experience builder for moving forward, like I've seen with the men's team, I see the women's team getting better from match-to-match," concluded Prudhomme. "We're looking forward to getting back out there against two really strong teams in Hawaii next week."
