SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Grand Canyon University women's tennis team completed their second fall tournament of the season at the San Diego State Invite this weekend. The final day of the competition was cancelled due to inclement weather.
"We were sorry to have the weekend cut short by a rainout on the final day, but we gained much from the first two days of the SDSU Invite," said head coach Greg Prudhomme.
The Lopes had a successful weekend in the doubles draws.
Lana Rinaldi and
Marie Deleval made their way to the finals of the second flight where they would have faced a pair from UC Irvine. To advance, they defeated a team from San Diego State 6-2 in the opening round before defeating Loyola Marymount 6-1.
Tatum Prudhomme and
Susan Baklini won their opening match over San Diego in a tiebreaker, before falling to a duo from San Diego State.
Alexandra Petrzalkova and
Kylie Waschuk teamed up for a 6-3 victory in the first round, before being defeated by UC Irvine in the quarterfinals.
"Lana and Marie did a great job earning a spot in the finals of their doubles flight but will have to settle for 'co-champs'," explained Prudhomme. "Tatum and Susie along with Alexandra and Kylie paired up for the first time and made it to the semi-finals of the first and second slights, respectively, and would have played for third place today."
Petrzalkova and Baklini each advanced to the consolation finals in their draws. Petrzalkova won her match over Evy Van Genechten from Denver, winning 6-2, 7-6. Baklini battled in a three-set match over San Diego State's Olivia Larsson for her victory.
"Among some good singles wins, the highlight of the tournament was Susie Baklini's 7-6 in the third set win that lasted over two hours and ended 13-11 in the tiebreaker after saving a match point," continued Prudhomme. "As a transfer player for us, Susie is quickly epitomizing the culture of 'attitude and effort' that we stress on the GCU tennis teams."
In the fourth flight, Deleval won her first match 7-6, 6-3 over Fiona Majendie from San Diego before falling to San Diego State's Dora Somoracz 7-5, 6-2. Rinaldi defeated UC Irvine's Andrea Duva 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals where she fell in a three-set competition against Maureen Slattery from Denver.
"The girls all made improvements to their game and fought really hard with positive attitudes," Prudhomme concluded. "We will apply the things that we learned at the tournament, put them into practice this week, and be ready to compete again next week at Long Beach State."
Grand Canyon will travel to Long Beach, Calif., next weekend for the Long Beach State Fall Invite. A full recap of the event will be available at
