PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon University men's tennis team is traveling to Las Vegas, Nev., this weekend for the UNLV Invite. This marks the fourth tournament of their fall slate.
In their last tournament, the team took on the strong competition in the ITA Southwest Regionals.
Senior
Felix Schueller made it to the round of 16 in the main draws of the singles tournament. He battled out back-to-back three-set victories over players from Loyola Marymount and San Diego State. In both matches, he made a comeback after falling short in the opening set to earn the win.
Against San Diego State, Schueller took on Frederik Gelbrich who was ranked No. 77 in the NCAA last season in singles. This marked the first top-100 win for a GCU player since the team made the transition to Division I.
Schueller fell in the following round to Pepperdine's Guilherme Ristow Hadlich, who was seeded 10
th in the draws.
In the consolation bracket, both
Gregoire Balenci and
Meidy Chazeau earned their way to the quarterfinals. Balenci took on two close three-set matches against Cal Poly and San Diego, while Chazeau faced competitive matches against San Diego and teammate
Justin Cvitanovic.
