LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Grand Canyon University men's tennis team completed their final road trip of the fall this weekend at the Larry Easley Memorial Classic, hosted by UNLV.
On the opening day of the invitational, both
Felix Schueller and
Mitch Maroscher won their match in the first flight's singles draws.
Schueller defeated Northern Arizona's Felix Schumann in a close three-setter, winning the opening set 7-5, but falling in the second set's tiebreaker. The final set was also extended to a tiebreaker where Schueller picked up the win. Maroscher won his match in straight sets over Shoki Kasahara, giving up only three games.
Both Schueller and Maroscher fell in the second round of play. Schueller was defeated by UNLV's Alexandr Cozbinov and Maroscher was defeated by Oregon's Jayson Amos.
"The men had a strong final road trip for the fall," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "Felix and Mitch played strong singles to earn spots in the quarterfinals with both of them losing to the eventual singles finalists."
In the second flight singles match ups, both
Alexander Roggenkamp and
Meidy Chazeau fell in the opening round, but advanced in the consolation draws. Roggenkamp fell to Boise State's Tillman Hayes, but won a match over Rhett Boss from UNLV. Roggenkamp defeated an athlete from Mesa Community College in straight sets in the consolation semifinals. Chazeau also won his match in the consolation semifinals over a play from Mesa Community College.
"It was nice to finish the weekend with an all GCU consolation singles final with Alex and Meidy," continued Prudhomme.
In doubles, Maroscher and Chazeau teamed up to earn the 8-5 victory over a duo from UNLV. They picked up an 8-6 win over a pair from Mesa Community College to make their way to the doubles semifinals where they were defeated by a duo from Oregon 8-4.
"Mitch and Meidy did a great job pairing up for the first time this fall by earning a spot in the final four of the doubles," Prudhomme said. "The guys will have a short break and then wrap up what has been a productive fall season with our home event this weekend." Â
