The Grand Canyon University women's tennis team competed against New Mexico today in Albuquerque, N.M., to open their spring season. They were defeated 6-1.
"The girls fought hard today," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "It was a good, tough match to start the season. The other team played well. We lost a couple three-setters and we had leads in sets on other courts, so the 6-1 score wasn't entirely indicative of the close fight that we put up."
Sophomore
Alexandra Petrzalkova picked up the lone win for the Lopes, defeating Dominique Dulski in three sets. After dropping the opening set 6-4, she fought back to win the next two with a solid 6-1, 6-3 finish.
Senior
Priscilla Annoual and junior
Lana Macukat also extended their singles matches to three sets. Annoual lost the opening set in a tiebreaker to Emily Olivier, before winning the second set 6-2. She came up short in the third set tiebreaker 10-6. Macukat led the match over Rachana Bhat in the first set, but Bhat came from behind to secure the win.
"It was hard to lose the doubles point to start it off," continued Prudhomme. "We lost quickly on court one, but lost 7-5 on court three. That gave them the point, but we were up in the tiebreaker on court two at 6-6, 3-0, so doubles was close and singles stayed close right to the end."
Macukat teamed up with
Lana Rinaldi for the 7-5 loss at the third doubles slot, while
Silvia Tumova and Petrzalkova led in the unfinished match.
"There definitely is home court advantage when you're coming into the altitude and playing indoor tennis when the rest of our season is completely different, but we do it for a reason," Prudhomme explained. "We want to see these tough challenges and we want to be able to win matches like this as the season goes on and in the future. The best way to be able to win in these adverse situations is to get them on the schedule and test ourselves. It was a good way to get things kicked off."
"Tomorrow won't get any easier because we're playing South Carolina who is ranked 23 in the nation," continued Prudhomme. "We're going to come out of there stronger and tougher whether we're able to get the win or not. This is what we need to make sure that we're successful moving forward. The girls are going to make minor adjustments from what they learned today and try to apply it tomorrow to give it another good shot."
The Lopes will compete against South Carolina tomorrow at 10 a.m. in Albuquerque, N. M. Check
