The Grand Canyon University women's tennis team was defeated by No. 23 South Carolina today in Albuquerque, N.M. The match was played in a clinch/clinch format that ended play once South Carolina secured the win at 4-1. Two singles and one doubles match went unfinished.
"The girls fought hard against South Carolina today," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "This first weekend mirrors a lot of what happened last year. We played New Mexico first and had a hard fought loss, and then we played Arizona who was ranked top-25 during the season. Those two matches really prepared us for the rest of the season."
Freshman
Lana Rinaldi won her singles match 6-2, 6-3 against Ximena Siles Luna to earn a victory for the Lopes.
"It was great to see one of our new freshman pull off a win at number six today in straight sets," Prudhomme said. "Any time we can take sets off of a top-ranked team it means we're on the right track, so that win was key, especially from a player we're going to be counting on this year and in future years."
Junior
Lana Macukat and senior
Priscilla Annoual both had competitive singles matches that went unfinished. Macukat was able to battle back against Megen Cochran after losing the first set 6-0 with a solid 6-2 win in the second and Annoual had her second set tied 5-5 against Caroline Dailey when play was stopped.
"There was potential to put some extra wins on the board today, so I was happy that we came in today facing a stronger team than yesterday and actually came out with a closer score on a number of the courts today," explained Prudhomme. "But South Carolina is a tough team and they're ranked top-25 for a reason. We need more matches like this to take steps closer to becoming one of those teams."
In doubles, the team lost two matches 6-2 in the first two slots with the third match going unfinished. Macukat and Rinaldi were down 3-4 in the third doubles slot when South Carolina earned the doubles point.
"We saw the girls grow a lot in these two matches and they're looking forward to applying what they learned and getting back and working hard on the practice courts and being ready when we're up against UTEP in a couple weeks."
The Lopes will be back in Albuquerque, N.M. on Feb. 8 at 10 a.m. to face UTEP. Check back at
