Former Grand Canyon University wrestling standout
Tyrell Fortune won a pair of matches Monday at the University World Team Wrestle Offs inside the Riches Wrestling Complex on the campus of Arizona State University. The event, which is part of the USA Wrestling Team Training Camp, featured some of the top wrestlers from across the country.
Fortune will now go on to compete for Team USA at the World University Championships in Pecs, Hungary July 8-12. He took home a bronze medal from the World University Games last year in Russia.
Fortune went 2-0 Monday in the 125 kg (275 lbs.) weight class, defeating Austin Marsden of Oklahoma State twice in the best-of-three series by a score of 6-0 in the first match and 12-1 (technical fall) in match number two. Marsden was an All-American for the Cowboys in 2014 and took home second-place honors at the Big 12 Championships in 2012.
"He (Fortune) dominated every aspect of both matches today," said GCU wrestling coach R.C. LaHaye. "After getting a bronze last year in Russia, I know Tyrell is looking forward to going for the gold this year."
After being crowned a Division II National Champion in 2013, the Portland, Ore., native was named the Division II Wrestler of the Year. In addition to his long list of accolades at GCU, Fortune placed second in the men's freestyle at the 2013 U.S. World Team Trials.
