The Grand Canyon women's tennis team picked up their 10
th win of the season today, defeating Nevada 5-1 at the Caughlin Club in Reno, Nev.
The Antelopes are now 10-5 in their first season in D-I, while Nevada fell to 10-6.
With a weather threat in the forecast, the two schools opted to play the singles round first, as opposed to the normal routine with doubles leading of a match.
"It was a frustrating start to the day as we were forced into a last minute schedule change," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "There were moments when we thought it might snow, there was rain drizzle and tons of wind. With that said, our girls jumped out and took control early. So I am really proud of how the girls handled the schedule and conditions and instead focused on competing."
GCU was able to win five of the six singles matches, highlighted by
Tatum Prudhomme and
Alexandra Petrzalkova, each winning for the fifth straight time.
Prudhomme won 6-3, 6-1, while Petrzalkova prevailed 6-3, 6-2.
GCU's
Janaki Gunuganti ,
Frederique Van de Velde and
Silvia Tumova also won in straight sets.
The two sides did not contest the doubles point.
"This continues to show how much improvement the ladies have made," added Prudhomme. "Nevada is a good squad who recently beat Pacific, who we lost too earlier this season. So it ended up being a great day and we look forward to tomorrow."
Grand Canyon will have one more match this weekend, as they face Colorado State at 10 a.m. at the Caughlin Club.
