The Grand Canyon women's tennis team snapped a two-match losing streak with a 7-0 sweep of Weber State today in Las Vegas, Nev. The Antelopes are playing three matches over three days.
The win improves GCU to 7-5, while the Wildcats fall to 5-8.
"The girls did a great job and took charge right away with their play in the doubles," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "They then kept control, establishing early leads on many courts during the singles, leading to the win. It will be a short night, with the girls back in the afternoon tomorrow for the second of three straight days with matches."
The duo of
Janaki Gunuganti and
Frederique Van de Velde recorded their eighth-straight doubles win with an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles. They are 9-3 overall this season.
Grand Canyon won all six singles matches and did not drop a set in doing so.
Tatum Prudhomme (No. 2),
Silvia Tumova (No. 5) and
Alexandra Petrzalkova (No. 6) all won their opening sets by 6-0 scores. Prudhomme won her match after her opponent was forced to retire due to injury.
The women will return to the court tomorrow when they will face Idaho State in Las Vegas. They will wrap up their stay with a match on Monday vs. Seattle.
