The Grand Canyon University women's tennis team dropped a close 4-3 decision to University of the Pacific today at the UH Tennis Complex in Honolulu, Hawai'i.
The loss dropped GCU to 6-4 and snapped a five-match win streak, while the Tigers improved to 6-5.
"These 3-4 matches are always tough to lose," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "With that said, I told my team I would wear this loss like a badge of honor. They made GCU proud with their fight in this match as we had our chances to make it go our way. It is a match on paper against an established D-I program that a first-year transitioning school should not win. Looking at the big picture, we came as close as we can without winning, so I expect this to be another growth opportunity that will propel us to where we want to be."
The Antelopes dropped the doubles point despite getting a win at No. 2 doubles by
Janaki Gunuganti and
Frederique Van de Velde. The duo have now won six straight.
Priscilla Annoual raced out to an early lead at No. 1 singles by virtue of a 6-0 win in set one. She then dropped a close 5-7 second set and 2-6 in the third.
Gunuganti dropped her first set in the No. 3 singles match, falling 10-8 in a tiebreaker. She then rebounded to win the next two sets, 6-3, 6-1, extending her winning streak to eight matches.
Silvia Tumova won her third straight, claiming the No. 5 singles match in straight sets.
Alexandra Petrzalkova, who missed the last five matches due to injury, returned today and posted a straight sets win in the No. 6 position.
GCU will have tomorrow off before returning to the UH Tennis Complex to face host Hawai'i on Friday. The Rainbow Wahine are 5-7 this season.
