The Grand Canyon University women's tennis team fell 4-0 today to Arizona at the Robson Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz.
The Antelopes drop to 0-2, while the Wildcats improved to 5-0.
Despite not securing a match victory, GCU had some decent results in only its second D-I match as a member of the Western Athletic Conference.
The No. 1 duo of
Priscilla Annoual and
Tatum Prudhomme were up 3-2 when their match was stopped due to Arizona claiming the doubles round by virtue of their wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
Annoual was unable to finish her singles match that saw her down a set, but even at 4-4 in the second set against UA's Lacey Smyth, who is currently ranked eighth in the ITA Southwest Region.
Silvia Tumova also waged a spirited battle at No. 5 singles, falling 6-4 in the opening set before her match was stopped in the second set.
"We certainly do not like losing and it is not something we want to accept, but there are good losses and bad losses and today falls in the good category," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "We fought hard and not only were we up 3-2 at No. 1 doubles; we had a break point to go up 4-2. It is the second match that Priscilla and Tatum showed that they will be a very strong D-I doubles team. We have played UA three seasons in a row now. I can see the progress we have made against this nationally ranked D-I squad. We will keep working hard so that soon we will be on the winning side."
Grand Canyon will remain in Tucson this evening and will face Texas-El Paso tomorrow at 2 p.m. The Miners enter the match tomorrow with a 1-3 overall record and were also swept by Arizona today.
